MAIF Impact
MAIF Impact is the impact-investment fund of French mutual insurer MAIF, backing seed and Series A startups built for social and environmental impact. It is a generalist impact fund, not a water specialist, and water reaches it through its circular-economy and climate themes. As of 2026, (don't) Waste Water tracks two water companies it backs, vorteX-io and Toopi Organics.

The take
MAIF Impact is the in-house impact fund of a major French mutual insurer, and that parentage shapes everything it does. MAIF became a mission-driven company, a société à mission, in 2020, and MAIF Impact is the venture-style expression of that mission: small minority cheques into young French companies whose product is meant to do social or environmental good, not only to return money. It is patient, mission-first capital, not a financial-return machine.
MAIF Impact refreshed its leadership and thesis in June 2024, when Simona Chiavassa took over as fund director and the strategy was reorganised around five themes: education and fundamental rights, cities adapting to climate, the circular economy, the climate emergency, and biodiversity. Those five themes are the lens through which every deal now has to pass. A startup that does not bend one of them does not get a meeting.
MAIF Impact is not a water fund, and it would not pretend to be. Water shows up only where it overlaps those themes, which is why the two water companies (don't) Waste Water tracks both sit on a thematic edge: vorteX-io, whose satellite-connected micro-stations watch rivers for floods, and Toopi Organics, which collects human urine and turns it into farm biostimulants instead of letting it load up the sewers. Water here is a by-product of the climate and circular-economy briefs, never the brief itself.
MAIF Impact is the investor a mission-driven founder meets when impact is the actual business model and not a line on a pitch deck, writing seed and early-stage tickets across roughly thirty companies in its impact themes. For a water entrepreneur it is a generalist door, opened only when the technology also answers a circular-economy or climate question. That makes it a useful but selective backer, and a telling sign of how mainstream French finance now treats water, as one strand of impact rather than a category of its own.

Frequently asked
- What does MAIF Impact invest in?
- MAIF Impact invests in seed and Series A French startups whose core business model creates social or environmental impact. Since 2024 it has focused on five themes: education and fundamental rights, cities adapting to transitions, the circular economy, the climate emergency, and biodiversity. It takes minority equity and quasi-equity stakes.
- Is MAIF Impact a water fund?
- No. MAIF Impact is a generalist impact fund, not a water specialist. Water reaches it only where it overlaps the circular economy or climate. (don't) Waste Water tracks two water companies it has backed: vorteX-io, in satellite flood monitoring, and Toopi Organics, which recycles urine into farm biostimulants.
- What check size does MAIF Impact write?
- MAIF Impact typically writes minority cheques of 500,000 to 2.5 million euros, averaging around 750,000 euros, and makes roughly three to four new investments a year at seed and Series A. It can reserve capital for follow-on rounds, and invests through both equity and quasi-equity instruments.
- Who runs MAIF Impact?
- MAIF Impact is led by Simona Chiavassa, its fund director since June 2024, who took over operational leadership from Judith-Laure Mamou-Mani. Hélène Hannoir chairs the fund as president. MAIF Impact sits inside MAIF, the French mutual insurer, and is run as its in-house impact-investment vehicle.
- Is MAIF Impact the same as MAIF the insurer?
- MAIF Impact is the impact-investment fund of MAIF, the large French mutual insurer, not the insurer's policies or its other funds. MAIF became a mission-driven company in 2020, and MAIF Impact is how it backs young companies built to deliver social and environmental impact.
