Arian Edalat is the co-founder and CEO of Active Membranes, the Los Angeles company that makes reverse-osmosis membranes electrically conductive so they repel scale without antiscalant. After two decades operating and engineering desalination plants, he launched it in 2022 on a coating licensed from UCLA and has raised about $3.2 million, seed round included, as of September 2026.
Arian Edalat finished a PhD in chemical engineering at the University of Bradford in 2003 and went straight to the unglamorous end of desalination: running reverse-osmosis plants. His LinkedIn record reads like an operator's logbook, a nationwide portfolio of desalination plants for NVCo from 2003 to 2007, then three large municipal reverse-osmosis plants under operations contracts at FGC until 2011, then six years at Water Planet climbing from product manager to VP engineering, and a stint as president of MembranePRO Services. In June 2019 he founded Pacifica Water Solutions, a Los Angeles desalination consultancy that still runs today. That decade with his hands on the plants is where his whole thesis comes from: on the podcast he calls fouling and scaling the tail that wags the dog, because every pump, pretreatment step and recovery setting in a desalination plant exists to protect a membrane that, in his words, is a dumb plastic with no say in what arrives.
Arian Edalat launched Active Membranes in 2022, when a coating developed in David Jassby's laboratory at UCLA came up for licensing and Pacifica's profits went into the venture instead of a bigger consultancy. The coating makes a standard polyamide membrane conduct electricity, dropping its surface resistivity from 10 million ohms per square to between 100 and 200, and a few volts of alternating current then let the membrane push away the charged minerals that would crust onto it. In Active Membranes' first long-term pilot, on an existing brackish-water plant in Yuma, Arizona, that ran 84% recovery with no antiscalant (about 92% with a second stage on the brine, by his count) and cut cleaning events from nine to three in nine months, all company-reported figures. The first coated sheets came off a Home Depot drum and a $200 wall sprayer; the production machine that followed, the Spitfire, is cheap enough to franchise, which is the business model.
Arian Edalat funds all of this the way he operates plants, sparingly. My Leviathan database holds two seed entries for Active Membranes totalling $3.24 million: a $2.3 million round closed in July 2024, led by Natural Ventures with Echo River Capital and Pacifica Water Solutions, plus a 2025-tagged extension. Grants and prize money make up the rest of the roughly $3.2 million he quotes, and the $5 million round he is raising is meant to be the last one before profitability. The recognition list is long for a company this small: Water Technology Idol at the 2023 Global Water Summit in Berlin, the US Bureau of Reclamation's More Water, Less Concentrate prize, a place in the Imagine H2O accelerator, and in May 2026 a semifinal spot in both tracks of the $119 million XPRIZE Water Scarcity competition. Arian Edalat is candid that the endgame is commercial, not saintly: an exit is on his 2030 horizon, and, as he put it on air, he is not Gandhi and has investors to repay. What keeps him readable as a founder is the operator underneath, the man who names his family as his most unexpected partnership, hires for character before experience, and describes the desalination industry as a dinosaur waiting for an asteroid while quietly building the asteroid on a $200 budget. His peers in the membrane cluster, Sue Mecham at NALA Membranes and Craig Beckman at Aqua Membranes, attack the same fouling problem from the material and the spacer; Arian is the one who attacks it with electricity.
