The take
Stena AB is one of Sweden's largest family-owned groups, a Gothenburg shipping and ferry dynasty that Sten Allan Olsson founded in 1939 and his son Dan Sten Olsson has run since 1983. So when Stena backs a water company, the money comes off the balance sheet of an industrial owner playing a long game, not from outside investors it has to repay on a fund's clock.
Stena keeps water inside its New Business area, the same new-ventures arm that openly builds water-treatment ventures to cut industrial pollution. That is why both of Stena's water bets are Swedish and practical: Orbital Systems in Malmo, whose closed-loop shower recaptures and purifies water for up to ninety percent savings, and Atium in Gothenburg, whose electrochemical filters pull mercury and metals out of contaminated water.
Stena is what I file under strategic corporate: a company that invests its own money to learn an industry from the inside, not a fund chasing a return on a deadline. As of 2026 that comes to two water companies, a small but pointed slice for a maritime giant, and the kind of patient, balance-sheet capital a hardware-heavy water startup rarely gets from a classic venture fund.
