The take

Butterfly Ventures was born in Oulu, the northern Finnish city that emptied of engineers when Nokia unravelled around 2012. Matti Kanninen and Juho Risku won a bid from the City of Oulu to run a small regional fund, then grew it into one of the most active seed investors in the Nordics. Fourteen years and four funds on, the firm still backs the kind of hard, physical technology the Oulu talent pool was built on.

Butterfly Ventures is a deep tech and hardware house, not a water fund. It writes the first institutional cheque into pre-seed and seed companies across the Nordics and Baltics, and it gets in early: about 80% of its portfolio has no revenue when Butterfly arrives. Water is not a mandate here, it is something that turns up when a founder is solving a water problem with genuinely novel, defensible technology.

Butterfly Ventures' three water bets all sit at the hard-science edge of the sector. Retein embeds aquaporin proteins, the channels living cells use to move water, into filtration membranes; Atium builds reusable electrochemical filters that pull specific contaminants out of water; and 3AWater, the one round Butterfly led, makes a portable tester that reads water quality off nanomaterial sensors. Membranes, electrochemistry, sensors: this is water as a materials-science problem, exactly where a hardware fund is comfortable.

Butterfly Ventures has wired sustainability into the firm rather than spinning up a separate climate fund. Principal Liina Lehtonen leads its impact and sustainability reporting, and Butterfly publishes a net-impact figure alongside its returns. For a newcomer the read is simple: Butterfly is a deep tech generalist that keeps meeting water where the chemistry or the hardware is the hard part, and a fourth water name will most likely arrive the same way the first three did, through the technology rather than the theme.

Frequently asked

What does Butterfly Ventures invest in?
Butterfly Ventures backs pre-seed and seed deep tech and hardware founders across the Nordics and Baltics, usually writing the first institutional cheque before there is any revenue. It is a generalist, not a water fund: only 3 of its roughly 100 portfolio companies are water-related, which is why (don't) Waste Water rates its water commitment Committed.
Is Butterfly Ventures a water fund?
Butterfly Ventures is not a water fund. It is an early-stage Nordic deep tech and hardware investor, and water shows up in just three of its bets: Retein, Atium, and 3AWater. All three are hard-technology companies, which is exactly where a hardware-focused fund tends to wade into water.
Who runs Butterfly Ventures?
Butterfly Ventures was founded in 2012 by Matti Kanninen, its Managing Partner, and Juho Risku, both of whom have led more than 100 venture rounds since. The partnership also includes Ville Heikkinen and Tanya Marvin-Horowitz, with Liina Lehtonen as Principal leading the firm's sustainability and impact work.
Where is Butterfly Ventures based?
Butterfly Ventures is headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, and runs offices in Oulu, Stockholm, Tallinn, and Copenhagen. The firm started in Oulu in 2012, in the wave of engineering talent that left Nokia, and has since grown into one of the most active early-stage investors across the Nordics and Baltics.
What water companies has Butterfly Ventures backed?
Butterfly Ventures has backed 3 water companies: Retein, which builds biomimetic membranes using aquaporin proteins; Atium, which makes reusable electrochemical filters for contaminant removal; and 3AWater, a portable water-testing platform on nanomaterial sensors that Butterfly led at pre-seed. All sit at the deep-tech edge of water.
